Crystal is one of the most abundant minerals. Since ancient times it has enjoyed great popularity. The word „crystal“ comes from the Greek ‘krustallos’, which means „ice crystal“, because people thought that quartz crystals were pieces of ice that were frozen so deeply that they could not melt again.

The word „quartz“ is derived from the German word „Quarz“, which corresponds to the Czech word „hard“.

The best crystal has the clarity and luster of water and has been used throughout history to carve decorative objects and bowls. Today it is most often set in jewellery, where it is valued for its purity.

In the Czech Republic it is located near Nová Paka, Příbram, near Žulová in the Jeseníky Mountains, near Sobotín in the Ore Mountains, in South Bohemia, etc. The largest deposits abroad are Madagascar, Brazil, India, USA, Sri Lanka, Austria, Switzerland, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, etc.

HISTORY

In ancient Greece, it was believed to be the petrified ice of holy waters that never melted. Ancient Romans used it against fevers and to soothe pain. Tibetans used it as a remedy for open wounds, Japanese used it to symbolise patience and wisdom, Indians used it to communicate with the spirit world. Shamans in Australia used it to summon rain.

Christianity sees the crystal ball as God's white light, it contains a whole spectrum of colours, just like a rainbow after a rain. In the Middle Ages it was crushed into powder and used against dysentery, diarrhea, colic and gout. The pebble in the mouth eased the thirst and when placed on the tongue it was supposed to ease the temperature.

People of all cultures have revered it and put it to practical use. Wearing crystal has always been associated with balance, clarity and energy and has been attributed with benefits to overall health and spiritual well-being.
