The word Calamus comes from Greek and it means reed.
It has been used for an estimated 4,000 years. It was well known in ancient India and China. In Indian Ayurveda it is referred to as vacha. It is mentioned in the Bible. The Egyptians used the plant for its aphrodisiac effects. It was also referred to as the holy reed. It probably came to Europe thanks to the Tatars, who considered it a plant that miraculously purified water. The water in which it grows is guaranteed to be drinkable. Many also compare it to ginseng, the spice of life.
The essential oil from the sweet flag is labeled as toxic due to its beta asaron content, therefore it is standardly not used in aromatherapy. It is an antiseptic and insect repellent and it is used as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, cosmetics, cleaning products and perfumes (woody and leathery scents) and for ceremonial purposes.
