Multiple chemotypes of thyme
There are several chemotypes of thyme essential oil, which in addition to the
aroma, differ slightly in their effects.
Thyme oil, with its predominant chemotype component thymol,
is considered the strongest and most intense. However, it can be
irritating to the skin, so it must be used with great caution,
following the recommended dosage. The chemotype borneol is
rated as finer in comparison, due to its lower thymol content.
The linaloolchemotype is the gentlest of these and can be used
by children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Thyme of the chemotype thymol is also sometimes called
red thyme. This is because the metal vessels react with the
phenolic compounds contained in this oil and turn red.
Be careful with thyme
Although the effects of thyme essential oil are beneficial, do not use it
during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with children under 12 years of age. It is
also not suitable after major surgery and for bleeding disorders.
When using on skin, follow the recommended lower dilution,
maximum 1.3%.
