Although the effects of spruce essential oils are similar, there are differences in the scents. While the scent of the gray spruce /Picea glauca/ is lighter and fresher, the aroma of the black spruce /Picea mariana/ attracts attention spicy tones. The smell of the bark and wood of the black spruce is in contrast to the smell of needles more woody. Norway spruce Picea abies is characterised by a much more pronounced resinous freshness.
